So, it seems that in the future no one will have to drive anymore thanks to Google. The software gurus have been working on self-driving cars for a while now. At the recent TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference in Long Beach, CA, Google was giving rides in their pre-programmed Priuses. I wish the videos had better angles but I’ll take what I can get. The cars were programmed to follow a course and switched over to manual mode after the course was finished so a human could take over and park the car. Since it was a closed course the cars were programmed to drive rather aggressively just to show what they can do. Its like an Android-powered autocross!
And a quick vid from outside the car
I’m not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I enjoy driving and automobile-related things. What would I do in a car if I didn’t have to drive? Stare out the window? Sleep? I’d just take public transportation and skip buying a car then.
On the other hand, the software will probably have a higher success rate than the average text-obsessed teen driver. Ok, maybe that’s a bit harsh. Or is it?
